Apple now has two very different answers to the question, “What should a premium iPhone do?” The iPhone 18 Pro is a familiar phone with a stronger camera setup and a $1,199 starting price in the U.S. The iPhone Duo costs $1,999 and opens into a much larger screen. That extra $800 is a serious amount to pay for a hinge. The decision comes down to how often you would actually use the space behind it.
The timing matters, too. The iPhone 18 Pro has been available since September 18, 2026. Apple says iPhone Duo pre-orders begin October 16, with U.S. availability on October 23. Until the Duo reaches buyers, its everyday feel and long-term wear are still questions, not settled facts. Apple
The quick comparison
| iPhone Duo | iPhone 18 Pro | |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. starting price | $1,999 | $1,199 |
| Starting storage | 256GB | 256GB |
| Display | 5.4-inch outside; 7.6-inch inside | 6.3-inch single display |
| Chip | A20 Pro | A20 Pro |
| Rear cameras | 48MP Main and 48MP Ultra Wide; optical-quality 2x from Main | 48MP Main with variable aperture, 48MP Ultra Wide and dedicated 48MP 4x Telephoto |
| Unlocking | Touch ID in the side button | Face ID |
| Weight | 254 grams | 211 grams |
| Apple-stated video playback | Up to 31 hours on the inner screen or 44 on the outer screen | Up to 36 hours on U.S. eSIM-only models |
These are Apple’s stated specifications, not results from the same real-world test. In particular, the Duo’s battery figure changes with the screen you use. Apple
What are you paying $800 more for?
Picture a normal afternoon: a message arrives while you are looking at a map, or you want a recipe open while making a shopping list. On the Duo, the 7.6-inch inner screen can show two apps side by side using Split View. Apple also says you can open two windows of the same app. That could be useful if you spend time comparing documents, reading, planning trips or handling work messages on your phone. Apple
The Pro cannot unfold into that workspace. Its 6.3-inch display is the simpler choice if your phone time mostly consists of calls, photos, short videos, messaging and scrolling. You get a large screen without opening the device to use it.
There is a catch to the Duo’s compact-on-the-outside idea: its 5.4-inch cover display is smaller than the Pro’s screen. You might find yourself unfolding it for tasks you would finish directly on the Pro. Apple lists the Duo at 254 grams versus 211 grams for the Pro. Those 43 grams and the Duo’s extra thickness when folded are worth considering if your phone lives in a jeans pocket all day. Apple
The camera choice is easier than the screen choice
The Duo has a 48MP Main camera and a 48MP Ultra Wide. Its 2x option comes from the Main camera rather than a separate telephoto lens. Its folding shape has an appeal of its own: you can use the outer display to frame a rear-camera selfie, show the person you’re photographing a preview, or prop the phone for a call. Apple
The iPhone 18 Pro is the more flexible camera purchase on paper. Alongside its Ultra Wide camera, it has a dedicated 48MP 4x Telephoto, while its 48MP Main camera adds variable aperture and manual controls. If you photograph concerts, pets across the yard or people from a distance, that extra lens is a practical reason to choose the cheaper Pro. If you mostly take family pictures at regular distance, the Duo’s cameras may cover what you need. A bigger screen alone does not make it the better camera phone. Apple
Battery life: look at the screen you’ll actually use
Apple quotes up to 31 hours of video playback on the Duo’s inner display and up to 44 hours on its outer display. For the U.S. eSIM-only iPhone 18 Pro, Apple quotes up to 36 hours. The Duo also has an Apple estimate of up to 24 hours of mixed use when both screens are used equally. Apple
Those numbers describe different ways of using the phones. If you buy the Duo to keep its large screen open, the 44-hour outer-screen figure is a poor guide to your day. It makes sense to wait for independent battery testing before declaring either model the winner for your routine.
Both phones use the A20 Pro chip. The $800 premium is paying for the folding display and the ways iOS uses it, rather than a higher-tier processor. Apple
A few details that could change your mind
The Duo uses Touch ID in its side button; the Pro uses Face ID. Think about which feels easier when you pay at a counter or unlock your phone while walking. Apple
Apple gives the Duo an IP68 water and dust resistance rating and describes several layers of protection around its folding screen. That is reassuring on a specification sheet. How the inner screen and hinge feel after months of use is something an announcement cannot establish. If durability is your main concern, try the Duo in a store and look for longer-term owner reports. Apple
If you want to write or sketch on the large display, there is another date to watch: Apple says support for Apple Pencil (USB-C) will arrive later in 2026. Do not buy the Duo in October expecting Pencil support on day one. Apple
So, which iPhone should you buy?
Choose the iPhone Duo if you regularly wish your phone had room for two apps, spend a lot of time reading or reviewing material away from a desk, and can justify paying $1,999 for that larger screen. Its best feature pays off when you open it often.
Choose the iPhone 18 Pro if you want a lighter phone that costs $800 less at the starting price and gives you a dedicated zoom camera. For most people shopping for one premium phone, it is the easier purchase to justify.
There is no need to decide on launch-day excitement alone. If the Duo interests you, try its cover screen, hinge and inner display in person after October 23. Five minutes with the apps you already use may answer the $800 question better than a long specification list.
